Daily Life
When families visit Providence Pass, they are pleasantly surprised to find we are situated in a beautiful community with endless opportunities for recreation and nature. The students live in homes in communities just a short drive from the counseling center and school. Each morning the students begin their day with a walk. Following a morning walk, the house parents start the day with a healthy breakfast before departing to Celebration for the day.
The students attend our private preparatory school five days a week in the downtown area of Celebration Florida. Certified educators and teachers are available to the students in the classroom and individual education plans are developed to meet the students’ academic needs. All clinical staff are present through the day to conduct individual, group and family sessions. Lunch and snacks are catered in to ensure each student is getting her nutritional needs met.
The day wraps down with a nutritious evening meal and a small evening group meeting. Students are assigned rooms and will often rotate from room to room and house to house. While consistency and structure are key, room placement is imperative to the success and emotional growth of the individual. The housing is comprised of three homes offering different environments and community feel. We want each student to enjoy all that Providence Pass has to offer so while here so she will spend time living in each home. Our homes are designed with both safety and comfort in mind.
Household chores, laundry, cooking and budgeting are all part of daily life at Providence Pass. She has a voice in the menu’s, recreational activities and group outings. Weekends are reserved for lots of fun and great experiences for memories to last a lifetime.
Adjusting to a New Environment
The therapeutic process begins the moment the student walks through the doors. A peer leader is selected to be a mentor and source of encouragement and support for each new student. The peer leader provides friendship and positive encouragement to help her settle in and feel welcome. Upon enrollment, each student will participate in all group activities and social outings. It is our goal to help her heal by inviting her to form trust with the staff and students. Feeling welcome into the peer group is the first step to beginning the healing process.
Social Media
It is no secret that many teens today struggle with self-esteem and self-identity. While at Providence Pass there is no access to any personal electronic device and no access to social media platforms. It is often referred to as a “social media cleanse”, which means no access to social media or any communication forum utilized to connect with friends back home and ends with establishing a new social media presence by wiping prior photos and posts. A fresh start is essential to long-term success and identifying new circles of friends with a clear understanding of social media safety is part of the process. A home plan is created to include social media presence after the program and parents will work with the primary therapist to establish safe boundaries within the use of online platforms.
